Ms. Merrie Kapron, Teacher

Dear Parents,

Welcome to Art Class! I am really excited to continue working with your child this year. Below is a brief outline of the curriculum overview and expectations.

Curriculum Overview

The Diocesan curriculum guide is cumulative, leading the students through discovery and exploration to proficiency in three areas:

Creating Art—which includes the elements and principles of design and the
use of processes and techniques to communicate and create original and interpretive works;

Relating to Art—in Historical context; and

Evaluating Art—allowing the students to question, reflect and justify their conclusion about the nature and value of art.

In Kindergarten through 2nd grade, I will be using a variety of literature to incorporate the curriculum.

Grading

Students in grade K-5 will be graded using an Effort Rubric (please see attached).

Students in grades 6-8 will receive letter grades, using the daily Effort Rubric in addition to any assignment rubrics, class preparation and homework.

Homework & Class Materials (6-8th Grades)

The students will be required to bring their Sketch Book to each class. There will be occasional homework in art class for which students will be responsible for managing.

Special Activities/Event for the Year

Each class will participate in a “Class Project” that will be auctioned off during the Fundraiser. This is their opportunity to say “Thank You!” for providing them with a Catholic Education and for being involved in the Fundraiser.

Once again we will have the Fine Arts Night in the Spring, in which artwork from every student will be displayed for your enjoyment.

NEW this year, I would like to place some artwork in the Arizona State Fair!  For this year, I would like to submit sculptures only since all 2-D artwork needs to be matted. Unfortunately the 2-D artwork was due in by Sept 14th (which would be do-able but for the fact that they all need to be matted.  That takes time and our art department doesn’t have a matt cutter yet.  So, at the end of this school year, I will be keeping a few items of artwork so I can matt them over the summer for next year’s State Fair.  These items will be returned after the State Fair next fall.

Volunteer Opportunities

I will need some help with the Fundraiser and State Fair projects or various class projects. If you would be available, please sign the Volunteer List or send me an e-mail. THANKS!

Art Wish List:  Matt cutter, tiles for mosaics, we always need plastic lids from large yogurt/cottage cheese/sour
