At St. Timothy's we are dedicated to helping our community grow in catechetical formation in Catholic Social Teaching. We also seek to provide parishioners with opportunities to learn about and become involved in the work of the Church on behalf of social justice.
This mission of the Church is founded upon the values of justice and charity found in Sacred Scripture and the social doctrine of the Catholic Church from Pope Leo XIII in 1891 through our current Pope, Benedict XVI, who says, "To love someone is to desire that person's good and to take effective steps to secure it." (Caritas in Veritate,7)
Jesus came to save us from sin and to redeem what was lost through sin, but as Catholics we know that our sin effects not only our relationship with God, but also our relationships with one another. For this reason our redemption and salvation must include not only a restoration of communion with God, but also a healing and transformation of the human relationships that have been wounded by sin. This concept stands as the motivating force behind Catholic Social Teaching, bringing the principles of the Gospel into our social interactions, to infuse all social relations with the values of the Kingdom of God: values of love, dignity, compassion, and justice. It is, as Pope Benedict XVI said, "The proclamation of the truth of Christ's love in society." (Caritas in Veritate, 5)
The Gospel must be continually proclaimed as good news to a world in need of transformation as Vatican II said, "(Jesus) was crucified and rose again to break the strangehold of personified Evil, so that this world might be fashioned anew according to God's design and reach its fulfillment." (Gaudium et Spes, 2)
"Action on behalf of justice and participation in the transformation of the world fully appear to us as a constitutive dimension of the preaching of the Gospel, or in other words, of the Church's mission for the redemption of the human race and its liberation from every oppressive situation." (Justice in the World - Synod of Bishops, 1971)
